The Student Assembly last night elected Unai Montes-Irueste '98 to fill a vacancy on its influential Membership and Internal Affairs Committee.
The seat was vacated when Luke Felker '00 left Hanover last week. Felker is on a leave term, but had remained in the Upper Valley for the beginning of this term.
Montes-Irueste is a student organization representative from the South Asian Politics and Education issues group. This was his first meeting this year as a member of the Assembly.
His membership is made possible by an amendment to the Assembly's constitution passed last week which made voting membership to the Assembly automatic for representatives of College-recognized student organizations.
Montes-Irueste has been a member of the Assembly in past years and has previously been on the MIAC, which determines if non-elected students can sit on the Assembly, reviews members' attendance and determines continued membership.
Montes-Irueste said in his nomination speech that he is well qualified to sit on the committee despite his inactivity this year.
"I was active historically and am most familiar with the membership committee," Montes-Irueste said.
Montes-Irueste joins Ed Bialas '01, Vice-President James Gallo '99, Rachel Gilliar '98 and Scott Jacobs '99 on the MIAC.
Lisa Emerson '01 and Sena Ku '01 were also nominated for the vacant seat.
Chair of the Student Life Committee Dave Gacioch '00 also announced that the Student Rights cards which detail the rights and responsibilities of Safety and Security officers, Hanover Police and students, will be printed tomorrow.
Gacioch said the wallet-sized cards will be distributed to sophomores during Summer term registration and to all other members of the community in the Fall.
