Cycling hosts 'Hell of the North'
The Dartmouth cycling team hosts the Hell of the North Criterium race from Occom Pond to Webster Avenue on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The event will continue throughout the day, with the premier races beginning around 1 p.m. Over 200 racers from the Ivy League and schools throughout the Northeast will compete on the .72 mile course that begins near Occom Pond, follows Occom Ridge before making a left onto Webster Avenue, and then making another left onto N. Main St. The race will continue for over 30 laps.
The favorites to win the competition are the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State and the University of New Hampshire. These races serve as key preparation for the East Coast Cycling Conference championships. It is the first time Dartmouth has hosted a cycling event in over 20 years.
"There are a lot of people who are good athletes and ride bikes here. I hope they come out because when they see road racing, that it is not really that hard to do or scary, they might be interested in trying it themselve," Rob Dapice '00 said. "It is a great sport and we are glad to be able to share it with the College and the town after such a long absence."
Riding hosts Dartmouth Invitational
The Big Green riding team hosts two of its biggest meets of the year when they compete in the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday and then comes back on Sunday to host the Regional Championships.
Eleven schools are scheduled to compete during the two days. In the Invitational on Saturday, all team members will be allowed to compete while on Sunday, only those who qualify for the championships will be able to compete.
"We should be one of the favorites but there are a lot of good teams competing," captain Megan Phillips '99 said. "But we have the best horses and the home field advantage so we should be tough to beat. We are definitely excited about our chances."
