To the Editor:
DDS, like most other areas of the College, exists as a service for the students. As such, it is important that it provides a reasonable value for the service that is offered to its users. These values might include convenience, quality and price, and each one of us has a different view of which is most important to him/her. Maybe DDS can run a leaner operation, but the "give" will probably come at the expense of one of these key values.
Like any other "business," DDS needs to respond to the desires of its customers. Those of us who have frequented DDS' facilities for a number of years have been witness to many changes that have been made with this goal in mind. The open availability of food in the Food Court is one such change.
One of the hidden expenses of any business is theft. The last few times I have eaten at Thayer, I have witnessed: A young man consume a Rice Krispie square while waiting for his meal; A young woman polish off a small helping of fries while in line at the grill. She left the empty container on the tray slide.
If these people had done this at the Foodstop, EBAs or Lou's, they would be charged with theft. Certainly not all who frequent Thayer abuse the system. However if students want to help control their food costs, they can do their part by helping to curb theft of food by their friends. After all, we all pay for it.
