Over the Weekend

Field Hockey: The women's field hockey team was unable to overcome Ivy League foe Cornell yesterday afternoon, as it fell 3-2 in double overtime. Senior Sarah Drake, and Weze Shorts '99 both scored for Dartmouth. For complete story, see tomorrow's issue.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Big Green opened their season yesterday afternoon with an exhibition with Ottawa. Dartmouth won 5-3 behind two goals from John Sturgis '98 and a goal and an assist from Billy Kelleher '96. Dartmouth opens regular season play Friday at home against Army.

Men's Rugby: For the third consecutive season, the Big Green finished undefeated in the New England Premier League (7-0 record) with a 63-14 win over Norwich University this weekend. Captains Torbjorn Dimblad '97 and Pete Martin '97 each had 14 points on the day. Winger Doug Burnaford '98 and center Gregg Smith '97 scored two tries, and fullback Jeff Woods '97, lock Doug Heyman '98 and Irfaan Jetha '98 contributed a try apiece. The Big Green (8-1-1 overall) opens Northeast playoff action at home Saturday playing a New York Union representative.

Sailing: In a home regatta this weekend, Dartmouth placed first out of 10 teams. Jeff Blecher '98 sailed with Lauren Tulp '00 and Alex Neuhoff '00 sailed with Dave Mace '98 to lead the Big Green to victory. Carrie Gilbert '97 sailed in the Women's Single-handed National Championship this weekend in San Francisco, Calif. Gilbert went through two-qualifying events earlier this season to reach the event. She placed 13th in the two-day regatta.

Men's Crew: The varsity heavyweights blew the competition out of the water this weekend at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY. In addition to winning all three major events outright, they also broke three course records in the eights, fours and pairs race divisions. Dan Protz '98 placed second in the single skulls. He paired with Jamie Peschel '99 in the double skull to take first. Peschel and James Jarrett '97 were also first in the pairs.

Women's Crew: The women's crew also made waves this weekend at the Fish, winning the gold in three events -- the open fours, the open double, and the mixed eight. In the open double, Sandra Muller '99 and Cate Mowell '98 placed first. They were followed by teammates Olivia Giddings '98 and Katie Taylor '97. The combined performances of the men's heavyweight squad and the women's varsity earned the regatta high-point team trophy for Dartmouth.

Men's Water Polo: The Big Green placed first in the New England Water Polo Associations Championships this weekend. They defeated Bowdoin 27-2, Coast Guard 17-5 and then downed Williams in the finals 16-10. For complete story, see tomorrow's issue.
