No Montgomery Fellow yet named

Dartmouth will not be hosting a Montgomery Fellow this summer, while Fall term's Fellow has yet to be chosen.

The College did not host a Montgomery Fellow this term due to the ongoing renovation of the Montgomery House on Rope Ferry Road, executive director of the Montgomery Endowment Barbara Gerstner said.

"I'm doing extensive work at the house," she said. Gerstner said that the work on the home which hosts visiting Fellows will be completed within the "next couple of weeks."

Gerstner said the Montgomery House improvements were slated for the Summer term because of the smaller number of students and faculty on campus.

"If the program's going to be laid up for a time, it affects fewer students in the summer," she said.

The Montgomery Fellowship was established in 1977 by Kenneth Montgomery '25 and his wife Harle, to "provide for the advancement of the academic realm of the College ... making possible new dimensions for, as well as extraordinary enrichments to, the educational experience" at Dartmouth, according to a College press release.

Fellows visit the College for periods of three days to three terms, depending on how long the fellow can stay, the endowment's resources and whether they are able to teach courses.

Gerstner said the Fall term Montgomery Fellow has yet to be announced. Fellows who are able to stay at Dartmouth for the majority of the term are preferred, she said.

Recent fellows include Wilma Mankiller and Al Hunt.
