The Coed Fraternity Sorority Council elected Jaime Staples '98, a sister at Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, as its Summer-term president in last night's elections at the Collis Student Center.
Henry Rosevear '98, a brother at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, was elected the CFSC vice president.
In addition, Lincoln Willis '98 of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was elected programming liason, Raili Cook '98 of KKG was elected treasurer and Erica Ryu '98 of Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority was elected secretary.
Both Staples and Rosevear expressed a strong desire to continue improving the Greek system's image and relationship with the community over the summer term.
Staples said she hoped to "continue the unification that was started last term" and said "I think it is really important that the CFSC continue the trend of being proactive."
Staples said she felt the CFSC needs to continue to work as a group, rather than revert to its previous style in which each representative only looked out for the interests of their individual houses.
Strategies for communicating with the Dartmouth community, such as letters to the editor and columns in The Dartmouth and weekly press releases on Greek system activity, will be continued during the summer, Staples said.
She also said she plans to continue to work to improve the image of the Greek system and its relationships with the administration and the community.
Rosevear agreed that it was important to further the CFSC's Spring-term momentum.
"It seems like the next logical step to turn towards is community activity," Rosevear said.
He said the Greek system is "the only group of people who require of ourselves to do community service," although such beneficial efforts often go unrecognized by the community.
Both Staples and Rosevear discussed specific events they hoped the CFSC could organize over the Summer term.
They listed a Greek Olympics, a CFSC Symposium on Pop Culture to be held this fall and cooperative community service activities as priority events for the summer CFSC administration.
Both Staples and Rosevear said they felt a responsibility to reach out to all students -- including those not affiliated with any Greek house -- and to continue the tradition of open Greek events.
One of Rosevear's tasks as vice president will be to chair the CFSC's Judiciary Committee, and he said he planned to use the Summer term to institute some changes in that body.
Rosevear said he believes the judiciary system should force more accountability on people who attend events at Greek houses, rather than placing all the blame on the host houses.
"We can't stop everyone from climbing in our back door and drinking a beer they find in the trash," Rosevear said.
