New Assembly meets for first time this year

The 1996-97 Student Assembly had its first organizational meeting last night to elect a secretary and treasurer as well as four students who will comprise next year's Membership and Internal Affairs Committee in the sweltering heat of the second-floor lounge in Topliff residence hall.

President-elect Jon Heavey '97 gave a brief overview of projects he hopes the Assembly's seven standing committees will take on next year.

These projects include placing a student seat on the College's Board of Trustees, making dorm improvements and looking into creating a pre-med minor.

Heavey said he will nominate the chairs of the Assembly's standing committees this week and they will be subject to majority approval of the Assembly.

The members elected Nina Nho '97 as secretary for next year. Nho ran unopposed.

Nho, who is off campus this term, has been on the Assembly since her freshman fall and has served on the MIAC and the executive committee as vice president of administrative affairs and treasurer.

Bill Kartalopoulos '97 was elected treasurer of the Assembly for next year beating out Kris Jadd '97 and Scott Jacobs '99, who also ran for the position.

Kartalopoulos said through his work on the ad hoc committee on sponsorship and funding he has "come to the conclusion that the treasurer should have additional duties on the Assembly."

Current Assembly Treasurer Ben Hill '98 said Kartalopoulos is "one of the most dedicated and level-headed Assembly members" and it would be a "shame not to see him on [the executive committee] next year."

The MIAC, which will be chaired by Assembly Vice President-elect Chris Swift '98, consists of four elected positions. The MIAC approves Assembly membership and appoints students to College committees.

Kate Berkeley '99, Frode Eilertsen '99, Dave Evans '97 and Jay Park '98 will be on the MIAC next year.

Steve Salemi '97, Neeta Raghavan '98 and Rachel Gilliar '98 also ran for positions on the committee.

Heavey said next year's Assembly will hold another organizational meeting next week.
