After six weeks of debate, the Student Assembly last night tabled a resolution to tighten attendance rules because not enough members were present to vote on it.
The Assembly also discussed its currently inactive community service committee.
The attendance resolution, sponsored by Case Dorkey '99 and Ben Hill '98, which calls for a constitutional amendment for members to lose their voting status if they miss a combined total of three general or committee meetings, did not pass when it was voted on three weeks ago. The resolution also defines all absences from general meetings at the regularly-scheduled time as unexcused.
Three-fourths of the Assembly must vote for a constitutional amendment to pass it.
The amendment required the support of 32 members, only 31 members were present when the resolution was debated, Assembly Secretary Robin Nunn '99 said.
Assembly President Jim Rich '96 said it was "embarrassing and absurd" the Assembly had debated the attendance resolution for so long and had not reached a consensus.
After the Assembly discussed the resolution, Dorkey tabled the resolution until next week and the Assembly discussed the currently inactive community service committee.
Rich said he has not appointed a vice president to the community service committee because he thought "by the first week of this term, it would be impossible to create an agenda to come to fruition this term."
He also said he thought having members on a community service committee would take members away from other committees.
Rich said the Assembly must decide whether to keep the community service committee for next year.
Vice President of Communications Jonah Sonnenborn '99 said the Assembly will hold a town meeting next Monday. He also said a letter will go out to students late next week outlining what the Assembly has accomplished this year.
Simone Swink '98, vice president of student services, said the Assembly has arranged end-of-term buses to New York and Boston.
Dominic LaValle '99 said 210 classes from this term will be surveyed for the on-line course guide and he is looking for students to help put the evaluations in the computer.
