This past weekend at Army, the women's swimming team went into the meet looking to extend their winning streak against Army, and they did, rather easily with a 138-105 victory that lifted the team's record to 4-5 and 2-3 in the Ivy League.
"We took advantage of the opportunity to swim in a fast pool," co-Captain Karyn Bysshe '96 said. "At this point in the season, when we are tired and just beginning to rest, it is important to seize those opportunities. We put forth a good team effort and definitely outswam them with some season bests coming from Dawn Lawrie '97 and Lindsey Noecker '97."
The Big Green moved into the lead quickly behind Emily Atkinson '99, Andrea Hill '97, Bysshe and Deb Whitney '96 who combined for a 4:05.37 victory in the 400 yard medley relay.
Dartmouth then swept the top three spots in the 1000 yard freestyle. Whitney continued the streak winning the 200 yard freestyle in 1:56.33, the only swimmer to break the two minute barrier.
But Army was able to break the Big Green's dominance as it took first in the 50 yard freestyle. Wendy Simon '98 finished second in the race in the time 26.01, followed closely by teammate Dawn Lawrie '97 in 26.10.
Of course, the Big Green came right back with a win in the next event. Dartmouth took first and second in the 400 Individual Medley. Hill won in 4:39.50 followed by Bysshe in 4:42.79.
Army managed to break the Big Green's recent dominance on the diving boards, as it won both the three meter and the one meter diving competitions. Erika Monahan '96 finished second in the one meter diving with 244.05 points. Courtney DuBois '99 finished third in the three meter competition to lead the Big Green with 240.38 points.
The women started the second half of the meet slowly, dropping the top two spots in the 100 yard freestyle. Dawn Lawrie '97 led the team, taking third place in a season best 56.43.
Army then surprised Dartmouth by winning the 200 yard backstroke as Bysshe was touched out, finishing second in 2:15.54. But the Big Green regained form in the 500 yard freestyle behind junior Amy Schneeberger's 5:12.64 victory.
Hill's performances throughout the competition were the highlight of the meet. She not only won every event she was in, but Hill also set a new pool record in her last event, the 200 yard breaststroke, winning in 2:22.38. Catherine Sterling '98 and Wendy Simon followed up with a one-two finish in the 200 yard butterfly.
The Big Green closed the meet with a 7:57.85 victory in the 800 yard freestyle relay.
The Dartmouth women are going into the final week of dual meet competition this Saturday, taking on Yale at home. The meet will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Karl B. Michael pool.
