The women of Dartmouth's sports teams, along with women and girls across the country, will be honored this weekend as part of National Girls' and Women's Sports Day.
According to Marketing Intern Amanda Wood, over the course of the weekend, the College will sponsor several events "to honor the achievements of women and girls in sports." The College will kick-off this annual event on Friday night at the women's basketball game.
"It's a great idea just to put the focus on women's sports," women's squash co-Captain Trisha Cunningham '96 said. "I hope a lot of people come out and that they realize these athletes are special people who put a lot into their sports."
Spectators can look to find free t-shirts and posters at the women's basketball games on Friday and Saturday nights. Also during Friday's game, the girls in the women's basketball fan club will have the opportunity to participate in a mini game during half-time.
After Friday's game, the College will hold a special reception to recognize all-Ivy championship teams as well as "any female athlete all-Ivy candidate," Wood said.
On Saturday Dartmouth hosts three women's home events, including women's hockey against Harvard, women's squash versus Princeton and women's basketball against Yale.
Again, the College will hold a reception on Saturday for all female athletes. Each athlete is allowed to invite one faculty member or administrator.
Women from local high school teams have also been invited to come out and support the Dartmouth athletes on their respective teams.
"Dartmouth has been involved [in National Girls' and Women's Sports Day] for many years now," Wood said. "The activities have grown over the past few years. The College has put more of an effort into it."
According to Wood, expectations are high for Saturday's events in hopes that women and girls who play each sport will come out to take part in the day.
