Tracksters qualify

The Dartmouth track teams were in action this past weekend competing in the Dartmouth Invitational.

The women had strong performances with wins from Katie Johnson '99 in the 400 (1:03.90), Kristin Manwaring '96 in the 800 (2:12.43), Helena Kimball '99 in the 1,000 (2:59.01), Maribel Sanchez '96 in the 1,600 (4:55.42) and Beth Knowlton '99 in the 55 meter hurdles (8.84).

"I think we had a really good performance," Kimball said. "Every week we keep improving and that's what we are looking for."

On the men's side, Wayne Burwell '97 won the 200 (22.78) and 400 (50.01), while Will Uppington '96 won the 800 (1:55.65). In distant running, Uppington finished first in the 3,000 (8:53.65) and Bill Tsiaras '99 won the one-mile run.

On the field, Amy Winchester '96 continued her dominance winning both the shot put and weight throw. For the men, John Fernquest '98 won the high jump, while Alex Ghanotakis '97 won the shot put.

With the Heptagonal Championships next weekend, several of the Big Green's top runners did not compete so that they could rest.

Instead, coaches used the meet to determine who would compete for next weekend since the Big Green are limited to 33 entrants.

"It was a small meet, but a very important one," Coach Barry Harwick said. "We were able to better figure out who is really ready to go for next weekend."

The Invite was also used as a last meet for Dartmouth tracksters to qualify for the ECAC and IC4A Championships March 2-3.

Kimball and Manwaring were both successful and will compete in the ECACs in the 1,000 and 800 respectively. The women's distance medley relay team also raced fast enough to qualify.
