Squash teams falls to Harvard, defeats Tufts

The squash courts heated up again yesterday as the men and women played a doubleheader against Harvard and Tufts.

In an impressive show of strength the men lost to first-ranked Harvard 2-7. Maintaining his perfect record so far this season, Bill Tarr '98 beat Harvard's number seven player in five games. The other win came from Ross Hallock at number nine, also in five games.

Assistant coach Shireen Kaufman said the match was very big for the men. "Normally we get stomped on" by Harvard, she said. She said it is an achievement to avoid being shut out by Harvard.

Despite losing 0-9 to Harvard, the women also put forth a remarkable effort. At number one Laurie Sykes '99 went 4-9, 4-9, 6-9 against one of the top players in the country. Melissa McCollum '96 at number three also lost a close match. Jen Karlen '98, Victoria McEvoy '97 and Andra Winokur '99 all stretched their matches to four games. Karlen played at number six, McEvoy at eight, and Winokur at nine.

Both the men and women shut out Tufts painlessly without giving up a single game in any of the matches.

Scott Hammond '96 led the men with a win at number one against Tufts.

The women have advanced to a record of 9-4 for the season, 1-4 in the Ivy League. They are looking to carry this success into the Howe Cup Championship at Yale February 16-18.

For the men, 7-8 overall and 1-6 in the Ivy League, match play will resume this weekend as they face Franklin and Marshall and Hobart at F&M. Their team championships will be at Yale February 23-25.
