Run DMC may not come to College

According to a electronic-mail message forwarded to The Dartmouth, the rap group Run DMC has canceled its performance scheduled for Feb. 2 in Webster Hall.

Ruth Morgan '96 and Dave Grelotti '96 co-chairs of the Programming Board refused to comment.

No reasons were provided for the group's cancellation in the BlitzMail message sent to Programming Board members from the group's BlitzMail account.

The electronic mail message also states "there will formal announcements [this] week with instructions on how ticket holders will go about getting refunds. Tickets for the show cost $7 for Dartmouth students.

The message also states that "with board approval, we will put in a bid on KRS1, another rapper/hip-hop artist."

Run DMC, a rap/hip-hop trio from New York, gained world-wide fame with in the early '80s.

Kara McGee '97 said she was unhappy to hear of the alleged cancellation.

"They are slick," McGee. "It is not often that we get slick performance artists here at Dartmouth. I personally don't like lame artists like Dave Matthews or the Pretenders which cater to the flannel-wearing masses," she said.

"Run DMC is like old school rap, which is infinitely cool. That is why I bought tickets," McGee said.

"It's very disappointing. If Run DMC doesn't want to come to Dartmouth, who will? I was really looking forward to it. Why couldn't Dave Matthews cancel instead?" McGee asked.

Hein Koh '98 wrote in an e-mail message that she purchased Run DMC tickets because she was excited to hear "the first decent music group to come to Dartmouth" while she has been on campus.

"It sucks that the performance is canceled. How and why, I do not know. All I know is that I better get my money back ..." Koh wrote.
