Tim Moore, director of student activities and the Collis Student Center, is leaving the College today to become director of the Hughes-Trigg Student Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
According to Dean of Student Life Holly Sateia, the College has not begun the search to replace Moore.
In the meantime, Associate Director of Student Activities Linda Kennedy will act as director of student activities and Collis Center Operations Manager Brenda Goupee will head Collis.
Moore's new position at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center, which he said combines elements of Collis, the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts and Thayer Dining Hall, will entail broader responsibilities than his job at Dartmouth, and Moore said he is looking forward to the challenges of his new job.
The Hughes-Trigg Student Center is much bigger than Collis contains a food court, a convenience store, a post office, a hair salon, a travel agency, an art gallery, a 500-seat theater, a ballroom and administrative offices.
Moore said he is also looking forward to living in Dallas, a city he hopes will prove more cosmopolitan than Hanover or Lebanon. SMU's campus lies three miles outside downtown Dallas.
Moore came to the College in September 1991 as the director of student activities, but Collis has been central to his life during his five years at the College.
When Moore arrived at Dartmouth, the College was planning to renovate the old Collis Center, which, according to Moore, was too small and ill-designed to accommodate the diverse activities students desired. Moore said the chance to be part of a significant renovation project was one of the attractions that brought him to Hanover.
Moore quickly joined the effort to create a new and more useful building, and after a year of renovation, the new Collis Center opened in January, 1994. Moore immediately became assistant director and then director a few months later.
According to Moore, Collis deserves a place alongside the College's most celebrated landmarks.
"If you stand out in the center of the Green and do a 360 degree turn, you really see what I think represents the highlights of Dartmouth College," Moore said.
"You have Dartmouth Hall and Baker Library representing some of the finest aspects of intellectual life on campus. But Collis really represents the out-of-class experience," he explained.
Moore said his responsibilities at the College have included making sure Collis is well maintained, painted, cleaned and allocating space to students and faculty for programs. As director of student activities, he has helped student organizations find funding.
Moore said he feels the classroom is not the only place at Dartmouth where students can learn important lessons.
"If it weren't for ... students that are involved with the Programming Board and the student government, a lot of things simply would not happen on campus," he said. Moore said his role has been to support and assist these students.
