Big Green qualify runners

This past Sunday at the Terrier Classic held at Boston University, four more members of the Dartmouth track teams qualified for the NCAA indoor track championships.

Jack Dwyer '96 ran a personal best 14:08 in the 5,000 meter run to assure himself a berth in track and field's version of "the big dance." He will be joined by Maribel Sanchez '96, who came across the finish line at 16:43.90 and Jenna Rodgers '98, who was less then two seconds behind Sanchez at 16:45.66.

Sanchez qualified last week in the 3,000 meter run. Kristin Manwaring '96 also qualified this week in the 3,000 with a time of 9:37.86.

"It was a good opportunity to have some high quality competition and a fast track," Rodgers said.

Tim Farrell '96 performed well in the 800 meter run, notching a time of 1:51.97, while Jim Tuxbury '97 and Ryan Donovon '96 qualified for the IC4A meet with their times in the mile. Don Conrad '99 also had a strong race in the 5,000 meter, posting a time of 14:57.08.

"Any time a freshman breaks 15 minutes in the 5 km is pretty good," Dwyer said.

The women's team was at home over the weekend, hosting rivals Vermont and New Hampshire in a tri-meet. UVM took top honors in the meet with 57 points, while Dartmouth followed with 48.33.

Amy Winchester continued her dominance of the throwing events, picking up two more wins in the shot put and weight. Her throw of 48 feet, four inches upped last week's toss in the shot by about two feet. Stacey Briere '97 finished fourth in the competition.

The jumpers also had a fine weekend. In the triple jump, Pilar Rodriguez '97 and Lauren Newton '98 finished first and second, respectively. Both leaped over 35 feet. In the long jump, Rodriguez took second and Newton finished fifth. High jumper Audra Rovinski '99 took fifth place in her event.

While Sanchez and Rodgers were burning up the track at BU, five women stayed home to take care of business in the 5,000 meter run at Dartmouth, taking five of the top six spots. Kristen Pierce '96 led the charge, followed by Deirdre Milligan '98 and Bethany Crenshaw '99.

Lorrin Higgins '98 and Stephanie Nearpass '99 rounded out the top 6. In the mile run, Helena Kimball '99 stepped into the runner-up spot.

In the dashes, Helene Sisti '96 continued her consistent performances taking the win in the 400 meter dash, while Rodriguez took second in the 55 meter dash.
