Armstrong '97 elected IFC president

Michael Armstrong '97, a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, was recently elected president of the Interfraternity Council.

Five new officers were elected late last week to fill spots on the 1996-1997 IFC directorate.

The new officers include Vice President Steven Sugarman '97, Secretary and Treasurer Arvidas Remeza '98, Rush Chair Peter Hasenkamp '98, Social and Programming Chair Mark Zanatta '97. Pete Galiotos '97 was elected alternate judicial committee member.

The IFC, which oversees the College's single-sex fraternities, held its first meeting last night.

As president, Armstrong said, his agenda includes restructuring and redefining IFC goals, responsibilities and its place on campus within the Greek system.

"Basically, in the past couple of years the IFC has been dormant," he said. "I would like to change it so that it has more of a say on campus."

Armstrong said the development of a official constitution will be a stepping stone for the council.

"We need to redefine our place on campus and in the community," Armstrong said. "[The IFC] needs a constitution outlining both its responsibilities and the structure of its offices," he said.

After developing a constitution, Armstrong hopes to tackle problems currently facing single-sex fraternities like low rush turnout.

"The number of people rushing now "are decreasing," Armstrong said. "That is a problem if we can't overcome that."

The IFC's past primary duty was to oversee rush and pre-rush activities, Armstrong said.

Sugarman could not be reached for comment. The IFC vice president is a judicial committee member.
