Although students may notice a brown discoloration in the water supply to many parts of campus today, a spokesman from the Hanover Water Works Company said the discoloration will cause no harm to students.
A water main under Crosby Street next to Topliff residence hall burst around 4:00 p.m. yesterday, producing discoloration in the water supply, according to Jim Stone of the Hanover Water Works.
The water discoloration was "not any danger to anyone," he said, adding the discoloration should subside by the middle of today.
Stone said the company was notified of the break at 4:20 p.m. and estimated the pipe would be repaired in a matter of hours.
On the east side of campus, which appeared to be the most affected by the water quality problems, the resulting discoloration reached as north as the Wheeler-Richardson cluster and Baker Library.
Additionally, the brown water reached as far west as the Russell-Sage dormitories.
Stone said the Water Works planned to flush the system after the main was repaired in an effort to clean the system and remove discoloration.
In order to make the repairs, the Water Works closed off the end of Crosby Street while they dug up the pavement to reach the main, which runs precisely down the center of the road.
