Walkway to close Wed.

As part of the ongoing renovations to Robinson Hall, the walkway between the building and the Collis Center will be temporarily closed as of tomorrow to protect pedestrians from the dangers on the construction site.

Assistant Director of Facilities Planning Jack Wilson said concerns about pedestrian safety led Jackson Construction Company to block off the popular path. Jackson began construction on the $3 million project in August.

Wilson, who is directing the project for the College, said Jackson is installing a new elevator and stairs in the back of Robinson. The installation will require masonry work and much scaffolding, which would pose dangers to pedestrians in the area.

The walkway may not be opened again until March, when construction on the elevator is scheduled to be completed, he said.

Most students use the path between Robinson and Collis as a shortcut from Thayer Dining Hall and Massachusetts Row to the Green and Main Street. The path's closure will most likely cause students to cut through Collis, potentially crowding the student center.

Wilson said he does not anticipate a problem with traffic through Collis, adding that the College wants students to pass through the building to expose them to Collis' programming opportunities.

Robinson Hall is home to many student activities including the Dartmouth Outing Club, the Aegis, WFRD radio and The Dartmouth.
