SA passes amendments

The Student Assembly last night passed 20 minor amendments to its recently overhauled constitution, streamlining the constitution but not making any significant changes to it.

Assembly Treasurer Ben Hill '98 proposed 27 amendments to the constitution. He later withdrew four and three were not approved.

A few of the Assembly's newest members involved themselves in last night's governmental streamlining.

Scott Jacobs '99 and Dominic La Valle '99 both recommended amendments to some of Hill's amendments. Hill accepted one from each as friendly amendments, which are now included in the Assembly's constitution.

The Assembly's vice presidents also discussed their committees' projects.

Laura Bennett '96, who heads the administration and faculty relations committee, said she will suggest the formation of a "Trustee Focus Group," to the Board when it meets on November 11.

The group would seat several student leaders who would meet and serve as student liaisons to the Board.

Bennett said the group is still in a design and planning phase and depends upon the approval of the Board.

Della Bennett '96, who heads the student life committee, said her committee is working on converting some outdoor tennis courts to basketball courts.

Also at the meeting, Assembly Secretary Jim Horowitz '98 was chosen to head an internal committee to find a more practical system for electing freshman representatives to the Assembly.

Assembly members had a few problems with this term's freshman elections, including a tie they were not immediately sure how to resolve, and one cluster failed to produce any representatives by the first candidacy deadline.

Horowitz said the committee will include the 10 freshmen on the Assembly plus five freshmen not involved with the Assembly.
