Lighting to be installed near A Lot and River Lot phones

To the Editor:

In response to Rachel Gilliar's column "A Voice Calling In The Dark" I would like to provide some information about a safety issue and the Escort Service.

First of all, I appreciate the information about the need for lighting near the A Lot and River Lot phones. Although this concern has never before been raised, it is a good observation, and additional lighting will be installed.

The next point relates to some questions [Gilliar's column raised] about our transport policy and practice, and specifically about a student's difficulty making an appointment for a ride. It's never been the policy to make appointments. This is because of the many calls we respond to that are often emergencies requiring immediate attention. Making appointments for rides would compromise our primary safety responsibilities, and students might often find that our other duties prevented us from meeting a specific appointment.

Escorts and transports are available in response to calls during the following periods:

  • Walking Escort service is available from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. daily.

  • Van Shuttle service commences at 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday

If you have questions or concerns about the transport policy or other safety issues, I am available during office hours on Mondays 2 p.m.-4 p.m.. Student Intern Tom O'Shea '96 is available on Wednesdays, same hours. Ken Clemmer '96 the coordinator for the transport/escort program can be reached on blitz or through our office. This term, since September 20, 1995, we have provided more than 1,200 transports on campus.
