College to launch new page

The College will unveil today a revamped World Wide Web home page that is more organized and easier to access, according to Andy Williams, manager of computer resources at the Kiewit Computation Center.

Williams, the College's "Webmaster," said the new page is better designed than the old one and contains several new features, including an index that lists all of the links available from the page and a help screen.

The help screen, which contains a list of common problems and solutions, is probably the most useful addition to the home page, Williams said.

He said the new page, located at http://www.dartmouth.edu, features a main page with links to several sub-pages, rather than a single page containing all Dartmouth links.

But despite the new look, the College's page has very few graphics and pictures.

"For me the point wasn't to create a graphics rich home page; it was to provide a clean, concise source of information on the College," Williams said.

"Using many images would slow down the pages," he said.

Williams said he plans to continue expanding the pages.

"I'd like to have a search and retrieval system, so that people can find what they want on the home page quickly," he said.

A plan to upgrade the College's World Wide Web computer server is also in the works, Malcolm Brown, director of academic computing, said.

"We have already brought down a new computer ... to replace our current server," he said.

The new machine, named "Webster," should be operating by January 1996 and will hopefully improve speed of the network, Brown said.

Brown said the College's web pages and students' personal pages, which are currently running on Macintosh servers in Kiewit, will be moved to "Webster" as soon as it is ready.
