Summer Carnival, the big summer weekend sponsored by the Programming Board, promises to provide interesting diversions for students today and tomorrow.
The festivities will begin tonight at 8:30 p.m. with Eleazer's Dungeon in Collis Common Ground featuring comedians Chance Langton and Al Ducharme, said Kristin Canavan '97, co-chair of the programming board.
The two headliners from Boston and New York City, respectively, have previously performed at the College and were invited back for this event.
On Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. the programming board has planned a "country fair" to take place on the Green, Canavan said.
Students will have the opportunity to play peanut bingo or pet Llorenzo the Llama, a special guest at the event.
Watermelon, lemonade and corn on the cob will accompany the traditional summer carnival pig roast.
The Programming Board has also rented novelty games for the event, including the gyroscope and fast pitch.
In addition to the novelty games, student organizations will sponsor booths, Canavan said.
"There will be everything from fake tattoos to water balloons and wacky noodles," she said.
Students will also be able to create their own jewelry at the Bead-o-rama -- a bead table.
Mongoose Root, a student band, will provide musical entertainment on the green throughout the afternoon.
The afternoon's events should be similar to those during the Saturday of Green Key weekend, Canavan said.
"It's going to be crazy, with people everywhere," she said.
Summer Carnival, which pre-dates Tubestock, was sponsored many years ago in order to have fun, said Linda Kennedy, programming coordinator.
Kennedy said Tubestock is not recognized by the College because it is a private party sponsored by alumnus Rick Ackerboom '80.
"Summer Carnival was started before Tubestock began and it will go on when Tubestock ends," she said.
Ana Henderson '94 who attended Summer Carnival last year, said it was not what she expected.
"My first impression was that it would be like Winter Carnival, but there wasn't as much going on," she said.
Henderson said the weekend reminded her of Green Key weekend.
"It's more like Green Key with the activities on the Green and they are mostly fund-raising activities," she said. "Last year there was a block party on frat row. It's fun."
