Tillman to take position at Drew

Associate Dean of Freshmen Anthony Tillman officially submitted his resignation yesterday to become the executive associate dean of student life at Drew University in Madison, N.J.

Dean of Freshmen Peter Goldsmith released a memo announcing Tillman's resignation yesterday afternoon. Tillman, who has been at Dartmouth since September, 1991, will leave in July.

Tillman had served as the assistant dean of student life at Drew before coming to the College.

Goldsmith said in the coming weeks he will "make arrangements for" an interim associate dean of freshmen, who will serve for about one year. The search for a permanent successor will begin in the fall, Goldsmith said.

Tillman could not be reached for comment yesterday.

In a telephone interview from New York last night, Goldsmith praised his colleague and said he would be "sorely missed."

"The departure of Tony Tillman is truly a loss to Dartmouth College, to the Freshman Office as well as to me personally," Goldsmith said. "He has been a magnificent colleague and friend, and I know he is warmly regarded by a great many students who will miss him sorely."

Class of 1998 President Randi Barnes, who worked with Tillman on Freshman Council, said Tillman cares about what students have to say.

"He came to a meeting of ours, not to speak or to present any ideas, but simply to listen," Barnes wrote in an electronic-mail message.

Goldsmith said although Tillman submitted his resignation just yesterday, he has known it was imminent for "perhaps a week."

According to Goldsmith, Tillman's new position at Drew is not as restrictive as his job in the Freshman Office.

"They offered him a position that was for him substantially more responsibility and autonomy," Goldsmith said. "It's a natural and understandable career move."

Drew had been interested in Tillman returning for a long time, Goldsmith said.

"They wanted him very much to return and they kept after him aggressively," Goldsmith said.

In addition to his positions in the Freshman Office, Tillman has served as the director of the Intensive Academic Support Program, adviser to the Afro-American Society, La Alianza Latina, the Freshman Council, the PanHellenic-Black Greek Fraternity and Sorority Council and the Interracial Concerns Committee.

In his four years at Dartmouth, Tillman has also co-chaired the Dartmouth Black Caucus, and is currently a member of the Advisory Boards of the Women's Resource Center and the Dartmouth Outing Club.

In addition, Tillman chaired the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee for three consecutive years.
