Tennis beats Cornell 6-1

The men's tennis team closed out its regular season Friday at Cornell with an impressive 6-1 win against the Big Red, who dropped to 6-11.

Dartmouth, who lost a disappointing battle to Harvard last Tuesday, battled back to defeat Cornell and claim a piece of second place in the Ivy League.

"A win is always good," Coach Chuck Kinyon said. "I thought we played pretty well."

The Big Green took an early lead, capturing the doubles point with wins from the number two team of Matt Fuller '97 and Captain Kurt Bruggeman '95 and the number three team of Chase Arnold '95 and Avery Rueb '98.

The Big Green suffered a disappointing loss at number one doubles by Holden Spaht '96 and Jim Rich '96 followed by a tough loss for Rich in singlesat the number one position.

At number two, Fuller continued his hot streak, defeating Tom Brownhic 7-6, 6-3.

"Matt has shown tremendous determination all season," Kinyon said.

Bruggeman needed three sets to overcome his opponent, while Spaht and Arnold won in straight sets despite each needing tiebreakers in one set. Rueb, who has come in as a strong number six player, dominated his opponent 6-1, 6-2.

Even though beating Cornell was the Big Green's main objective, a second thought of capturing a bid into the NCAA regional tournament this weekend was also a major concern. The Big Green find out this morning at ten whether they have been chosen to compete this weekend at Princeton for a spot in the NCAA finals.
