Pelton reorganizes Dean's Office

Acting Director of the Native American program John Sirois will leave the College at the end of the term, one of a number of administrators who are either leaving the College or taking on additional responsibilities.

Sirois has served as acting director since last summer, when he replaced former director Leisha Connors, who said she left for "personal reasons."

According to a letter sent out by Dean of the College Lee Pelton, Sirois plans to work for the tribal attorney's office for the Confederate Tribes of Coleville Reservation in Washington. Sirois will work in the area of environmental and fishing rights.

"I am leaving because I have a position with my tribe back home in Washington state," Sirois said.

Sirois, a member of the Class of 1991, said he enjoyed his year as acting director because as an alumnus he enjoyed "giving back into the Dartmouth community and the Dartmouth family by having a positive impact" on the campus.

One of his most rewarding experiences as an administrator was working with Dartmouth's Native American students, as well as other students, and seeing them become leaders, he said.

The search committee to find Sirois' replacement has invited several candidates to Hanover to be interviewed and expects to announce a new director by July 1, the letter stated.

In addition to Sirois' departure, Associate Dean of Freshmen Tony Tillman, Director of the International Office Judith Mackenzie, Director of Career Services Bill Wright-Swadel and Executive Officer for the Dean of the College Matthew McManness will also leave Dartmouth at the end of the term.

Because of these departures, some administrators will take on additional responsibilities, Pelton wrote in the letter.

Associate Director of Career Services Kathryn Hutchinson will serve as acting director. According to the letter, a national search for a permanent director will be conducted during Summer and Fall terms, and the College plans to have the position filled by Winter term.

Effective July 1, Dean of Student Life and Associate Dean of the College Holly Sateia will be promoted to dean of student life and senior associate dean of the College.

"This promotion reflects new duties that I have asked her to assume," Pelton wrote. These duties include coordinating and planning Commencement and Class Day activities, diversity programming for staff and working to increase the number of women and minorities within the dean of the College staff.

The letter stated Sateia will also work with Assistant Dean of the College Janet Terp to "represent the important contributions of student life to off-campus constituencies."

Terp will be promoted as of July 1 to associate dean of the College.

"This promotion reflects the excellent work that Janet has performed in a variety of areas since she was hired last year," Pelton wrote.

According to the letter, Terp will continue to serve as a liaison between the President's Office and the Board of Trustees on matters involving the dean of the College area.

"As a liaison to the College Development and Alumni Affairs Offices, she will ensure that external constituencies are fully informed of student life and dean of the College issues," Pelton wrote.
