Hurd '98 selected for NCAA golf tournament

Freshman golfer MacKenzie Hurd has been selected to compete in the NCAA regional championships next weekend in New Haven at the Yale University course.

After sensational fall and spring seasons, Hurd takes his game to the national level as he competes as an individual. Nine other players competing against Hurd and only the top two will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio State course.

Hurd is seeded fourth going into the tournament, with the top seeds being help by golfers from the University of Connecticut. Hurd is more than capable of moving up those two spots to qualify.

Golf team co-Captain Alec Dicks '95 believes Hurd can qualify. "Mac is a very strong golfer and I have complete confidence in his ability to get to the Championships."

One person who was not so lucky was senior co-Captain Bryan Kim, who was probably on the "bubble" for the tournament. The thing that may have hurt him is his fall season. Kim played well in the fall, but he did not play to the same level as Hurd.

Kim was seen as a top-10 golfer in the region, but was snubbed by the voters. He closed out his season last weekend at Harvard after winning the Ivy League individual championship earlier this term.

Hurd said he is nervous but is relishing the opportunity to play against all of the top competition. "It will be daunting playing against all of the southern boys, but if nothing else it will be a great experience as a freshman."
