Freshmen charged with drug possession

Hanover Police arrested Justin Littlefield '98 and Joshua Povill '98 for possession of marijuana Friday night at the Bema, according to a police press release.

Hanover Mountain Bike Patrol Officer Shawn Dupuis observed six Dartmouth students congregated at the Bema around 9 p.m. Friday, the release stated.

After observing what they thought was drug paraphernalia, Dupuis and Hanover Police Sergeant Michael Evans searched the six men, according to the release.

Littlefield said he and his friends were surprised by the police.

"The mountain bike took us for a loss at first because we did not know it was a policeman," Littlefield said. "Policeman Dupuis discovered one of my friend's pipes, and at that point he realized we had been smoking. He searched all of us and found myself and Josh Povill to be guilty of possession [of marijuana]."

Littlefield said the marijuana belonged to him. Povill denied owning any of the marijuana.

Littlefield will appear in Hanover District Court on June 13. Povill will appear in court on September 27.

Povill said neither he nor Littlefield has been contacted yet by the College regarding the arrest.

Dartmouth's Student Handbook states, "A violation of federal, state or local laws concerning drugs is a violation of College regulations and is subject to College disciplinary action up to and including separation."

Dupuis and Evans could not be reached for comment yesterday.
