Freedman to speak at Colby-Sawyer College

Colby-Sawyer College announced yesterday that College President James Freedman will speak at its 157th Commencement ceremonies on May 13.

Freedman, along with Carol Browner, the Environmental Protection Agency's commissioner, will speak to Colby-Sawyer's graduating class. Both Browner and Freedman will receive honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees.

Freedman is currently on a six-month sabbatical in Boston, working on his book "Idealism and Liberal Arts Education." He will return to Dartmouth in June.

In a telephone interview with The Dartmouth last night, Freedman said Colby-Sawyer President Peggy Stock recently invited him to give the Commencement address.

"I'm really very pleased," he said. Although Freedman said he had previously spoken with Stock and has visited Colby-Sawyer, he has no formal affiliation with the college, which is located in New London.

Freedman said it is important for Dartmouth to establish and maintain ties with other educational institutions in New Hampshire.

He said he will not be receiving any other honorary degrees this year.
