At first meeting, SA reviews winter projects

At its first meeting this spring, the Student Assembly discussed its projects from last term and passed a motion calling for a task force to investigate the College's advising system.

Meredith Epstein '97 proposed a motion asking the Assembly to form a task force charged with revising the advising system for first- and second-year students. She said there currently is no advising system for sophomores.

The resolution, which passed unanimously, calls for a group of three students, three faculty members and four administrators to propose revisions.

After surveying about 1,000 students, Epstein said she found most did not want new advising programs.

Brandon del Pozo '96 proposed a freedom of information resolution requesting administrators to reveal currently confidential information.

"We deserve to know the facts so we can incorporate them in our debate," del Pozo said.

But several Assembly members raised concerns that del Pozo's resolution was not specific enough. The Assembly voted to postpone voting on the resolution for a week.

Assembly President Rukmini Sichitiu '95 congratulated the Assembly for coordinating the mailing of more than 500 letters to Congress opposing proposed cuts in federal spending on student financial aid.

Ben Hill '98 became the Assembly's new secretary since no other members expressed interest in the position. He replaces Jesse Russell '96 who is on leave this term.
