Ski team ties former NCAA champs

Although Saturday's heavy snowfall made the Dartmouth Ski Team happy, the results from the University of Vermont Carnival also gave the coaches and the skiers a great deal of elation.

With wins in four events, and near wins in the four others, Dartmouth tied UVM for first place in combined weekend scores.

After winning the Slalom event at last week's St. Lawrence Carnival and losing the Giant Slalom to UVM, the Dartmouth men won both races this weekend in Stowe, Vt.

J.P. Daigneault '97, who took a fall in last week's GS competition, came in first place in Friday's race and teammate Jeremiah Thompson '96 placed second. Brett Grabowski of UVM took third place, but Big Green Captain, Andrew Martin '96, placed fourth, giving Dartmouth the win.

The Slalom event on Saturday was equally successful. Although UVM's Stefan Schadinger won the race, Martin took a close second and Ben Robinson '97, who won last week's Slalom race, placed third.

Daigneault, unable to match his previous day's speed, took fifth in the event, but it was enough to give Dartmouth first place again.

The Dartmouth women, improving from last week's competition, came in third in their Slalom race behind UVM and Middlebury, which tied for first place. Captain Jesse James '95 placed fourth, Laura Turner '98 placed fifth and Kate Buhrmaster '97 and Pam Finnerty '97 took 14th and 15th, respectively. UVM's Gibson Lafountaine won the event.

The team wasn't as successful in the Giant Slalom event, which Middlebury won. UVM came in second, UNH in third, and Williams in fourth leaving Dartmouth with fifth place.

On the cross-country trails, the Big Green were faster than ever. The men won both Friday's and Saturday's races, giving them their third winning weekend in a row.

"These guys completely dominated this weekend," said men's Nordic Coach Ruff Patterson. "We had a very good team about three years ago, but they can't even be compared to these guys. I'm very impressed with both the team's effort and the results."

Coming in first place in both Friday's 20K Classic race and Saturday's 10K Freestyle was Aki Partenon of UVM. But Big Green captain Cory Smith '96 and teammate Colter Leys '96 came in second and third, respectively, in both races and Paul Stone '98 finished fourth on Friday and fifth on Saturday, giving Dartmouth the win.

The Dartmouth women came in second place in both the 15K Classic and the 5K Freestyle race. Astri Sysse of UVM won the 15K race and her teammate Siri Halle came in second place.

After UNH's Emily Cartwright, Denali Kemppel '96 placed fourth, Captain Heather Eliassen '95 placed fifth and Valerie Wrenholt '97 took sixth. In the Freestyle race, UVM's Halle took first and Sysse took second. Kemppel placed third and Eliassen ninth.

"All four teams did extremely well this weekend," Patterson said. "This should give everyone the confidence they need in preparation for our Carnival next week."

The teams return to action at the Dartmouth Carnival races, which begin Friday.
