Last Thursday night, thieves broke into a room in the lower level of the Kiewit Computation Center and stole $8,200 worth of computer hardware.
Hanover Police Detective-Sergeant Frank Moran said the incident happened some time between 9 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. on Friday.
Hanover Police took fingerprints and searched the area, Moran said. The perpetrators removed the window in the door to room nine of Kiewit, reached through the hole and opened the door from the inside, Moran said.
Once in the room, they stole several Macintosh computers, he said.
Director of Computing Lawrence Levine said room nine is made up of three rooms used by network technicians.
Hanover Police have started an investigation but have no leads yet, Moran said
He said he hopes the criminals will try to sell the stolen property because the police know the serial numbers of the missing computers.
Moran said Kiewit lacks security patrols at night and is not heavily trafficked.
"It's a desolate location," he said.
Because Kiewit is open around the clock and people can be on the upper floor at any time, the lower level seems to get forgotten, Moran said.
Levine said the lower level of Kiewit is left open all night so students can use the Instructional Center, a classroom that also contains a number of computers for public use.
