Group will present findings

After a long afternoon discussing the College's alcohol policy for Greek-sponsored social events, a group of students and administrators will present a number of proposed changes to Dean of the College Lee Pelton early next week.

Coed Fraternity Sorority Council President Matt Raben '96 -- who led the "Committee to Revise CFS Social Procedures" along with Dean of Residential Life Mary Turco --said last night that he could not remember many of the committee's recommendations.

Turco could not be reached for comment.

Members of the retreat proposed the formation of an ad-hoc committee to examine the role of student monitors, Raben said. He said members of the retreat agreed student monitors should be more concerned with student safety than enforcement.

The ad-hoc committee would be chaired by the social chairs of the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council. The IFC overlooks the College's fraternities and Panhel governs the College's sororities.

It took just more than 10 hours for the 19 students and 10 administrators at the retreat to come up with a full set of recommendations, adapted from more than 30 proposals submitted by students and administrators.

"We went through all the suggestions, one-by-one and debated them piece-by-piece and eventually voted on them," Raben said.

Many of the recommendations aim to increase student education about alcohol, Raben said.

"We came up with a series of recommendations of changes that we think would improve the system," Raben said. "Sometimes a series of small changes add up to make a big improvement."

The retreat was planned two years ago when the College revised the alcohol policy to allow common sources to return to Greek houses.

This spring, Dean of the College Lee Pelton will charge a task force to undertake a comprehensive view of the College's alcohol policy.
