Carnival weekend is fairly quiet

Winter Carnival weekend was fairly quiet, despite the large amount of visitors to campus, College Proctor Robert McEwen said.

"It was busy in terms of activities and events going on," McEwen said. "There seemed to be more visitors this year than last year."

John Barrett '96 was arrested Sunday at 2:08 a.m. for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Hanover Police said they took Barrett into custody after the car he was driving hit an elm tree in front of Webster Hall.

Barrett was also charged with simple assault against Evans Macy, the arresting officer. Macy could not be reached for comment.

Barrett was moved to Grafton County House of Corrections and taken into protective custody. He was released Sunday morning on $1,500 bail and personal recognizance.

Barrett, reached at his home in New York City last night, declined to comment. He will appear in court on March 8.

Police also reported an incidence of alleged arson.

At 3:35 a.m. Saturday, emergency vehicles responded to a fire alarm at Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity. The alarm was triggered by burning newspaper, according to a Hanover Police press release.

Safety and Security Officer Andy Thibault discovered and extinguished the small blaze, which appeared to have been set deliberately, the press release stated.

Hanover Police said they did not know the identity of the alleged arsonist. No one was injured and the house was not damaged, the release stated.

Two inebriated students were picked up over the weekend by Safety and Security, but they were later turned over to their roommates, McEwen said. Safety and Security picked up seven intoxicated students at last year's Carnival.

This year's Carnival also had two alcohol policy violations involving open containers, as well as five reported acts of vandalism and one report of lewd and lascivious behavior by a nonstudent.

Most students said they enjoyed the Carnival weekend and events.

At the Psi Upsilon fraternity on Saturday afternoon, a large crowd gathered around the house's homemade ice rink to watch the brothers compete in the annual keg jump.

Erik Weeman '97 jumped 12 kegs to win the event. The event raised $1,300 for David's House, a home for families of children being treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, through sponsorships by local businesses, Psi U president Kevin Mollen '96 said.

"We made a lot more money for charity than we usually do", he said.

More than 400 students attended the Winter Carnival Formal on Saturday night, said Michelle Webb '95, who organized the event.

The formal, arranged by the Programming Board, was held in the Collis Common Ground.

The hall was decorated with the three-dimensional likenesses of animals like gazelles and polar bears, Webb said, in keeping with the Carnival theme, "Call of the Wild."

The Marcelles, a band from Boston, entertained students along with a four-string quartet in the first-floor lounge. The evening also included a raffle, a Pulp Fiction dance contest and karaoke.

"Everyone who was there seemed to enjoy it," Webb said.

After the dance, people who wanted to wear their formal clothes for a while longer attended the Evening of Elegance, a reception held by Asgard in Alumni Hall.

The Dartmouth Area Gay and Lesbian Organization also sponsored a dance, "Carnival is a Drag," on Friday night.

Earl Plante, co-chair of DaGLO, said the event was attended by about 250 people at its peak.
