To the Editor:
Winter Carnival was, as usual, a fun-filled and exciting weekend. The Winter Carnival Committee and student organizations planned a multitude of things to keep us busy, and I enjoyed taking part in them. The campus was alive with energy and vigor -- except for Baker Library.
With a lengthy mid-term due on Monday, I expected to be able to enjoy Baker's resources until midnight like any other weekend. Unfortunately, Librarian of the College Margaret Otto does not share our enthusiasm for late-night learning. It is ironic that as other campuses such as Columbia University are offering 24 hour library services, Baker was being shut-down at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The College Librarian should re-evaluate decisions like these, which deny students a choice between enjoying the social scene at their leisure and researching for their academic endeavors. The early closing of Baker for entertainment purposes is an invidious distinction that should be avoided in the future.
