Ellis, recovering, leaves hospital

Freshman Slade Ellis was discharged from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Saturday, three days after being in critical condition with spinal meningitis.

Director of College Health Services Dr. Jack Turco said Ellis will remain in Dick's House for the next 10 to 14 days to receive intravenous antibiotics.

Ellis's hospitalization came one week after a freshman woman was diagnosed with having the meningococcus bacteria in her bloodstream.

Both students had "type B" bacteria, which cannot be prevented by vaccine.

Turco said while he can not completely rule out a connection between the two cases, it is unlikely they are related. He said the New Hampshire Department of Public Health has been unable to find a link between the two cases.

"If they were a different type then we could clearly say that they were unrelated," he said.

Turco said he will mail out letters to the Dartmouth community later this week to bring them up to date with any developments.

Spinal meningitis is carried by air molecules like chicken pox but is not as easy to contract, Turco said. He said many students will carry the bacteria in their throat but very few will develop meningitis.

Turco said he will not rule out the possibility of discovering another case of meningitis and cited the University of Illinois, where seven cases were diagnosed in eight months. He said Health Services will remain on the alert until the end of Winter term.
