Council may ship in snow for sculpture

Although the lack of snow this winter has put the Winter Carnival sculpture in jeopardy, the Winter Carnival Council has not yet abandoned hope.

Council co-Chair Tamara Busch '95 said the council is looking into the possibility of shipping in snow to build the sculpture in time for Carnival.

Patricia Bankowski '95, head of the sculpture project, said she will know today whether this idea is feasible.

The scaffolds and wooden lattice presently in the center of the Green are part of the sculpture, following the "traditional process" of sculpture building that was abandoned in the early 1980s, Busch said.

The metal and wooden interior will provide support for the sculpture and will allow it to be much larger, Busch said. More importantly, this technique requires less snow.

In the past, when additional snow was necessary, it has come from Occom Pond. But because of the lack of snow, this is not a possibility this year.

The last time there was not enough snow to construct the sculpture was in 1971.
