The Office of Residential Life held its ninth annual Coed, Fraternity and Sorority Awards banquet last night in the Wheelock Room of the Hanover Inn.
Greek organizations received awards in a variety of areas.
Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority won the O'Connor Cup Award for being the Greek organization that "best exemplifies an outstanding organization in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and programming." The award is named after the late College Proctor John O'Connor, who served from 1964 to 1975.
Delta Delta Delta and Delta Gamma sororities each received awards for passing Minimum Standards with distinction, meaning they exceeded all six minimum standards. Tri-Delt and DG also were the recipients of the Dean's Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in Minimum Standards.
Organizations that passed Minimum Standards with Commendation (exceeding at least four out of six standards) were Alpha Theta coed fraternity; Theta, Kappa Delta Epsilon, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Sigma Delta sororities; and Chi Gamma Epsilon, Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities.
Academic achievement awards were based a point system, with different point values given to each scholarship level, including Phi Beta Kappa, Rufus Choates and Level Two and Three Honors Group.
The organizations with the highest point totals were Theta, KKG and Zeta Psi fraternity. The organizations with the highest percentage of total membership made up of those scholars were Zete, Theta and Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity.
Theta received this year's Recycling Award, given by Dartmouth Recycles Office to the organization with outstanding effort and improvement in recycling.
Winners of community service awards, given to organizations who "have participated in long term community service projects" through three consecutive terms, not including summer, were: Alpha Theta (John Sloan Dickey Endowment); Gamma Delta Chi fraternity (David's House); Beta Theta Pi fraternity (Windsor County Court Diversion Program); DG (Upper Valley Support Group; KDE (Upper Valley Hostel); Alpha Chi (Hanover Red Cross Blood Drive); Sigma Delt (Hannah House and Hanover Red Cross Blood Drive); Sig Ep (West Fairlee Village School); Tri-Delt (West Fairlee Village School); and Delta Sigma Theta sorority (David's House).
ORL also gave out special awards, which went to KDE for the New Woman Program; Sig Ep for the Balanced Man Project, DG for the 1995 15 Webster Avenue Award; Angela Lee '95 for Make a Difference Day; Dani Brune '96 for the New Member Series; and advisers Carla Manley and John Engelman for being co-chairs of the CFS Advisory Group.
