To the Editor:
I see the new graduation requirements for the Class of 1998 as more demanding than the previous curriculum. One is likely to take more elective courses to fulfill the general education requirements outside the major.
I applaud the idea of completing a "culminating experience" within one's major, such as a thesis paper, a creative project or a senior seminar. The new requirements would encourage students to think carefully about the courses they want to take instead of blindly choosing (relatively speaking) a series of incoherent courses from a smorgasbord of course offerings in order to complete the number of credits required for graduation.
This has the potential to make one's college experience fulfilling as one's education would be simultaneously broadened and focused.
