Halloween treats students to night of tricks

As witches and werewolves prepare for their Halloween night of revelry, the College celebrates the occasion in diverse but less threatening ways.

"I'm going trick-or-treating," Hae Un Choi '97 said. "I'm going to be a blockhead and act like a little kid -- they won't know I'm not, because I'm short."

She said that she is planning to go to all the nice, big houses to get the most candy.

Andrew Bender '96, an undergraduate advisor in Bissel Hall, said he plans to give rather than receive candy.

Bender is organizing a trick-or-treating event in the Choates for professors' children. "We've invited all the professors to come over with their kids," he said.

Residents of the cluster will have candy in their rooms to distribute to children and will also get the opportunity to talk to their professors, he said.

Bender said the goal of the event is to enable professors to become more acquainted with their students, especially the freshmen.

He said he also hopes the event will "get people to actually stop at the Choates."

Kaja Schuppert '95 said she purchased candy for her sorority -- Delta Delta Delta -- to distribute to neighborhood trick-or-treaters.

"We live on a residential street so it's nice to be a part of the community," said Schuppert, who added that she started the tradition last year.

Cat Weiss '97, who was wearing a loud 70s outfit yesterday, said she was helping out at a Halloween party to cheer up patients in the Psychiatry ward at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

While some organizations held Halloween festivities over the weekend, others will celebrate tonight.

The Freshman Class Council is sponsoring a Halloween Bash tonight from 8 to 11 p.m. in Brace Commons.

Several Greek houses also advertised haunted events for tonight.

Alpha Theta coed fraternity will host "Ghost Stories" at 9 p.m. A poster advertising the event said "bring along your most frightening tale to tell by the fire."

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity will host a party featuring the band "Mesh Ginkgo," which will play from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Other houses will also hold Halloween parties.

Jessica Russo '97, a pledge at Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, said she plans to participate in several activities offered by Greek organizations tonight.

She said she will attend Kappa's Halloween semiformal and then move on to parties at Theta Delta Chi fraternity and Alpha Delta fraternity.

During the weekend, The Masquerow Ball was held in Collis Center Saturday night. Massachusetts Row, Hitchcock, Gold Coast, East Wheelock, the Lodge and the Fayerweathers dormitory clusters sponsored the event, along with Zeta Psi fraternity.

"A lot of people there had a great time," said Carolyn Rice '95, a UGA in Mass Row, adding that many people came to the ball in costume after attending the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Panarchy undergraduate society also held a Halloween Celebration Saturday night.

Asgard hosted a haunted coffeehouse in the Hyphen Friday night, which advertised "tricks and treats and a costume contest." The prize for the contest was a copy of the video "The Nightmare Before Christmas."
