Respect Debaters

To the Editor

The article in Monday's D ("Debaters like to copy" August 15) concerning the debate institute being held at Dartmouth was one of the most infuriating articles ever written in this newspaper ... The unfounded assumption that debaters are responsible for lost books and stolen articles is both irresponsible journalism and baseless conjecture. The debaters and students at the institute compose one of the few student groups that utilize the library to its fullest extent. They are not horny teen-agers excited about looking at microscopic pictures of nude women, but intelligent high-school students researching issues on a level that only doctoral candidates can even come close to. The idea that debaters, in their use of the library, somehow prevent the more "legitimate" research by Dartmouth students is singularly absurd. The typical Dartmouth student's utilization of the library pales in comparison to the sophistication and intellectual depth of debate research.
