Water discolored today

The Hanover Water Company will begin its annual flushing of the town's water mains today, causing harmless water discoloration.

Facilities, Operations and Management Utilities Engineer Stephen Mischissin said the company, which supplies water to the entire town of Hanover, will generate high velocities in the main pipes to wash out any accumulated rust.

He said the routine flushing would result in brown-tinted water that still would be potable. He said rust accumulation is a normal occurrence.

In a BlitzMail message circulated Friday, Facilities, Operations and Management Secretary Anita Dole said the mains around campus are scheduled to be flushed today and tomorrow.

She said cleaning might discolor light-colored clothes in the washing machines and advised against doing laundry until the water becomes clear.

Mischissin said the company will open up hydrants to "get high velocities to clear up the rust sediments in pipes."
