If you are tired of roaming around looking for the big party on Webster Avenue every weekend, Kenji Sugahara '95 may have the solution.
About a year ago, Sugahara began sending his "Weekend Update" over BlitzMail. The electronic newsletter contains a list of activities for the weekend, including Greek parties registered with the Office of Residential Life and Hopkins Center events.
"I used to get so annoyed seeing people wasting party time walking around just wondering what to do," Sugahara said. "I'm just out there to help the students."
Sugahara started the newsletter when he was social chair for the Interfraternity Council. He said he got the idea from other electronic messages that circulated items such as quotes of the day or chain letters.
Sugahara and a friend, Andy Chu '95, who no longer attends Dartmouth, put together a list of what Sugahara referred to as "hard partiers." These specially-selected students received, via BlitzMail, a list of all the parties scheduled for the evening.
Under the new alcohol policy, all parties must be registered with ORL, and anyone can find out through the housing office which Greek organizations are having parties. Under the old policy, access to party information was more limited.
But Sugahara said ORL administrators are tired of answering questions from students about where the parties are. "ORL is getting sick of all of the calls," Sugahara said. "If you want the information, just contact me."
Sugahara said he will add anyone's name to his party list.
The list of newsletter recipients began with 10 people, but Sugahara now sends "Weekend Update" to more than 600 students each week, he said.
Due to several complaints from students, he eventually added non-Greek events such as those at the Hopkins Center and events sponsored by social organizations outside the Greek system like Panarchy and Asgard. Some organizations now send Sugahara information directly, he said.
