Q&A with new Dean of the College Kathryn Lively

In June, sociology professor and South House professor Kathryn Lively was named Dean of the College. She previously served as interim dean since July 2018, when former Dean of the College Rebecca Biron returned to teaching. As dean, Lively will oversee undergraduate academic life, the Student Affairs division and the six house communities. Her term began on July 1. In the following interview with The Dartmouth, Lively discusses her goals related to the house system, Greek life and more topics important to students.

College receives $10 million gift for Hood, West end expansion

Earlier this month, the College announced a $10 million donation from Molly and Gregg Engles ’79 as part of the ongoing Call to Lead capital campaign, which aims to raise $3 billion by 2022. The three-part Engles donation will support the development of the Arts District, the West End District and faculty recruitment, according to provost Joseph Helble.

Bang! Math professors prove TV show theory about the number 73

A proof co-authored by Dartmouth mathematics professor emeritus Carl Pomerance and Morningside College mathematics professor Chris Spicer appeared on an episode of the television series, “The Big Bang Theory” on April 18. The proof, which was featured on a whiteboard in the background of the show, reveals the uniqueness of the number 73.

Phew! West Leb man breaks whistle record

It’s a teakettle! It’s a dog whistle! It’s Andrew Stanford of West Lebanon recently breaking the Guinness World Record for highest note whistled — and it was whistled in Dartmouth’s linguistics lab. His whistle reached 8,372 hertz, eclipsing the previously established record of 7,040 hertz.

Last Thursday sees The Pitch in its sixth year

Dartmouth community members had the opportunity to showcase their business savvy and creativity last Thursday. Now in its sixth year, The Pitch, an entrepreneurship competition, was held on Feb. 21 in Filene Auditorium, attracting around 100 audience members. Twelve teams each delivered two-minute presentations to a panel of judges, which was comprised of two representatives each from the DALI Lab and the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship. Any Dartmouth-affiliated individual — undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff — is eligible to participate in The Pitch.

Courtyard Café to make Green2Go mandatory

The last disposable to-go container “walked out” of the Courtyard Café on Feb. 3. Starting Monday, anyone ordering something to-go at the Courtyard Café grill station will be required to buy a reusable Green2Go container.
