Apparently Keggy the Keg, Dartmouth's semi-controversial unofficial mascot, is back. Some of you may not have noticed that he ever left, but a new video from the Jack-O-Lantern has officially announced his return to the football scene. The Jacko's YouTube video has around 475 views so far.

A loud, slightly ominous beat was heard from Collis porch to the classrooms of Dartmouth Hall this afternoon. Though it seemed from a distance attributable to the beginning of pledge term festivities, the Creole Choir of Cuba was behind the stunt. The group, which draws on Cuban, Haitian and African influences, was being videotaped and attracted the attention of a small non-student crowd. The Creole Choir seemed to be performing as part of the Hop's publicity campaign for tonight's 7 p.m. show.

The Aires actually made an appearance in this Monday's Sing-Off episode, performing Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." They garnered rave reviews from the judges and what appeared to be a standing ovation. You can check out their performance without having to watch the whole episode here.

Well guys, we’re back. It’s getting crisp and autumnal, so we're providing a few warming recipes that you can use to impress your friends (and family? Your call):
1. Countrytime Lemon-laid Get a Countrytime Pink Lemonade from Bottomside, some cups ('15s take note: there are never enough cups at apregame, trust me) and some alcohol. This mixture works with literally any kind of alcohol but Svedka or Zhenka are best — the cheaper the vodka the better the burn. I mean taste. Everyone will have their own preference for how much powder to mix in but don't forget to add water, cause it will taste seriously Pepto-Bismal-y if you don't. Remember that you can always add more powder, but its harder to take it out (once you realize you have a two inch thick sludge of powder on the bottom its pretty much game over). But, if you mix this just right, you might just mix your way into a DFHU (dance floor hook-up, silly freshman!).
2. Honestila Time to break out that Patron and snag some Honest Tea from Novack. The combination of White Peach Tea and tequila goes down well, especially if you add a little classic 00s dance music (as in Stacy's Mom and some straws make this drink twice as nice). No tequila? No problem, go grab the Johnny Walker from under your bed and mix away with the Arnold Palmer version of Honest Tea (sigh, its almost like a Long Island iced tea ... less of a hangover though).
3. Yummy Yucca This drink includes its very own workout. Get a huge jug or container that you can shake like crazy and still have liquid in it. Pour a handle or two (depending on the size of your container) of cheap vodka in, about half of one of those little bags of sugar that they have at Bottomside (or the whole thing if you do two handles), a TON of ice from the ice machine next to the laundry room (that is, if you've found the laundry room yet) and throw in a half dozenish of halved and squeezed lemons and their rinds. Then shake shake shake for half an hour. I recommend wrapping a towel or two around your container so it doesn't melt everywhere, you want the ice to melt a tiny bit but not all the way. About 15-20 minutes in, check the melting situation and add more ice and sugar. Then stick 15 bendy straws in and sip like there’s no tomorrow!
4. Captain Morgan Reporting for Boxing Duty If you're bored of the old rum and Coke, try this rum punch out. Pick up some nutmeg on your next Co-op run while it's still above zero and the trek is manageable. Then make some simple sugar — microwave sugar and water for 10 seconds, stir, 10 more seconds and donezo. Put two shots of rum, one shot full of lime juice (as yummy as fresh squeezed is, just get one of those cute little pre-squeezed lime shaped things from the Co-op when you get your nutmeg), one shot full of simple sugar and lots of ice in a large cup, top with three shakes of nutmeg, stir vigorously and enjoy responsibly.
Happy fall!

Vermont has now joined the growing number of states that allow the sale of medical marijuana from an approved dispensary for patients who are seriously ill or suffer from chronic pain, according to WCAX News. Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill authorizing the creation of up to four dispensaries in the state, though under the law patients or their caretakers are allowed to grow their own marijuana. There are currently 300 Vermonters listed in the state's marijuana registry, though that number may grow in the wake of this new legislation.

Students involved in the $300 House Challenge, a program brought to campus by
Tuck prof Vijay Govindarajan, have likely already seen the Times op-ed column pointing out perceived flaws in the project.
Op-ed contributors Matias Echanove and Rahul Srivastava argue that the contest, which is offering $10,000 for the top three designs of affordable houses for the urban poor, does not consider the actual needs of the potential occupants and buyers of the designs. Many of the target neighborhoods — specifically the Mumbai area where the authors work — are short on space as it is. Houses serve not only as living spaces but also as work spaces, and are often adapted to suit their occupants’ needs. The pre-fabricated units, the article argues, would inhibit this kind of adjustment for use, and would lead to a loss of equity for low income home owners and loss of business for local construction firms.
Echanove and Srivastava conclude that “the $300 house will fait as a social initiative because the dynamic needs, interests and aspirations of the millions of people who live in places like Dharavi have been overlooked." While the piece doesn't look into other areas that Dartmouth projects are focusing on — such as recently devastated regions of Haiti — it may give some philanthropic-minded entrepreneurs and designers food for thought.

Baker-Berry's newest culinary attraction — the cafe recently set up in the renovated news room — is set to open this Friday morning at around 8 a.m. The food service will be run by King Arthur Flour and will feature everything from varieties of hot and cold caffeinated beverages to artisan sandwiches.
This Summer, the cafe's pilot program will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. The cafe will likely extend its hours to 1:30 a.m. for Fall term.
Highlight: Hot chocolate with marshmallows. We can't wait.

College President Jim Yong Kim and Conan O'Brien may share an unusually brusque handshake at Dartmouth's upcoming Commencement ceremony, as O'Brien just beat Kim in a recent Fast Company ranking of the 100 most creative people in business. While there's still time for resentment to fade, O'Brien came in a cool eighth place leaving Kim lagging behind in ninth.

Students have now officially begun to occupy the much-needed new study space created in the old news room. While the promised cafe treats aren't available yet, it looks like most of the equipment needed to make delicious hot coffee is in place. So far, the space is being used in a quiet, 3FB kind of way, but the addition of snacks may change the dynamic. We will of course report back in a bit with an update on this exciting new library nook.
