As part of the “Moving Dartmouth Forward” initiative, three working groups — focused on student and organization standards and review, social event and alcohol management and community citizenship — began meeting last week to examine current policy and potentially recommend changes in the wake of the plan’s announcement on Jan. 29. The groups will meet regularly and submit final proposals by the end of spring term for implementation this fall.

As student directors sift through applications for this year’s student show at Dimensions of Dartmouth — the College’s prospective student weekends — they said that no major changes are in store for the program, following administration-mandated changes between the 2013 and 2014 shows, as well as the Dimensions weekend programming as a whole, such as barring current students in the Dimensions performance from posing as prospective students.

Vice provost for academic initiatives Denise Anthony, who assumed the position last October, has been entrusted to help retain and recruit a diverse faculty at the College. Anthony’s new position was publicized during College President Phil Hanlon’s “Moving Dartmouth Forward” speech late last month, in which he also said the College has committed $1 million per year to further this diversity initiative.

Experiential learning and entrepreneurship have formed the majority of academic and educational programming put on by Greek organizations recently. From Experiential Learning University, or ExL — a leadership and entrepreneurship organization — to faculty dinners, Greek houses have been focusing on developing the leadership and entrepreneurial skills of both their members and other students through experience and interaction with professionals.

The amount of student bed space available in the College’s living and learning communities, now around 20 percent of all housing, will remain unchanged after the implementation of a residential housing system next fall, senior assistant dean of residential life and director of residential education Mike Wooten said.

Reactions to the announcement of a hard alcohol ban, new residential communities and increased academic rigor were mixed following President Hanlon’s unveiling of his Moving Dartmouth Forward policies Thursday morning. Faculty members interviewed generally supported the academic aspects while students were mixed on specific policies and the overall enforceability.

As President Phil Hanlon gears up to present his final Moving Dartmouth Forward plan to the Board of Trustees next week, some student leaders and faculty members have expressed skepticism as to whether the new policies will effectively change student social life, while others are hopeful and supportive. His presentation to the public, which will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 8:30 a.m. in the Moore Theater, represents the final step in a nine-month process to generate feedback and create new campus policies to combat harmful student behaviors and exclusivity.

Over 10 contracts to install solar panels have been signed during round two of the Solarize Hanover project, which is set to end on Jan. 31. Town officials involved in the project said they are hoping for more finalized contracts by the end of the month.

As winter sorority recruitment commences, Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority is undergoing an informal recruitment process with two “shake-out” events on Jan. 11th and 20th. Theta first announced the decision to withdraw from formal recruitment last April, and fall recruitment marked the first time in recent years that the sorority did not participate in the formal Panhellenic Council recruitment process.

Tuck Business School and Bowdoin College will offer a collaborative financial accounting course for Bowdoin students in the spring. The course, which will be conducted primarily online, represents an opportunity to experiment with technology, senior associate dean Robert Hansen said.

The Office of Pluralism and Leadership will begin searching for a new director in the winter. Since former director Alysson Satterlund left in July, Center for Gender and Student Engagement director Reese Kelly has served as OPAL’s interim director and the office has focused on filling other vacant positions.

Ebola preparedness programs are well underway at the College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Last week, DHMC announced that it would serve as the state’s go-to treatment center if any cases occurred, and Dartmouth launched an Ebola preparedness website that includes a message from Provost Carolyn Dever and executive vice president Rick Mills.

Superheroes came out flying on Sunday, or so it appeared as over 3,500 people, many in colorful costumes, participated the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hero half marathon and Ripcord 5K. As of press time, the hospital had raised more than $697,000.

On Monday, a group of students and community members gathered on the Green to bite into fresh, local apples, kicking off Food Week at the College. The Apple Crunch was the first of eight food-related events that will be held throughout the week, culminating Friday with a feast at the Dartmouth Organic Farm.

Last week, the graduate student council announced this year’s representatives — 37 new members and six returning members. During these representatives’ tenure, a task force announced by College Provost Carolyn Dever will work on a report that details the structure of a new, more cohesive graduate school.
