The Dartmouth Board of Trustees has voted to "freeze" its membership until the Association of Alumni's lawsuit against the College has been resolved. The decision, made Friday during the Board's annual Spring term meeting, follows the conclusion of online voting in the Association elections.

Student involvement in the Association of Alumni elections took a new turn as members from at least two sororities took part in a Monday night phone drive organized by Dartmouth Undying that targeted alumnae. Dartmouth Undying supports candidates who oppose the Association's suit against the College.

Dartmouth will give 10.2 acres of land to Hanover following a Tuesday vote by town residents to accept the exchange, according to Town Manager Julia Griffin. The land transfer is part of a two-decade old agreement between the town and Dartmouth to allow for the College's Grasse Road housing development. The land, located near Grasse Road, will be used for recreational fields or affordable housing, Griffin said.

A Colorado court sentenced Derrick Begaye on Monday to 48 years to life in prison, the maximum penalty, for the sexual assault of Nicole Redhorse '95. Redhorse died following the assault, which occurred on June 6 and 7, 2007.

Alumni have allegedly been subjected to "push polls" favoring the pro-lawsuit candidates in the Association of Alumni election over the last week, according to active alumni. The Dartmouth has been unable to confirm who commissioned the data collection, as leaders of both sides of the debate denied involvement.

Twelve members of the College's Board of Trustees sent a letter to Dartmouth alumni on Monday which alleges that those individuals working in support of the Association of Alumni's lawsuit are part of a national effort to further an ideological agenda at the College. The letter was a direct response to a different message sent to alumni several weeks ago by the Board's four other alumni trustees, all of whom are supportive of the Association's suit.

If the elections produce a majority that supports the suit, the case will go to trial in November. If not, the committee will most likely instruct its lawyers to file for a voluntary dismissal, immediately ending the legal effort.

Association of Alumni President Bill Hutchinson '76 criticized a letter sent to alumni by a majority of the Association's executive committee that heralds the success of the Association's lawsuit. Hutchinson denounced the letter for being sent without the authorization of the entire committee and for containing many "falsehoods." Hutchinson, through the College, sent an e-mail to alumni on April 21 to "clarify" the source of the letter and express his opposition to the lawsuit.

Dartmouth College has been subpoenaed as part of New York State's investigation of the student loan industry. The subpoena, dated Feb. 14 and recently made public, was brought by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and was brought about by the College's relationship with Bank of America.
