Although the decision by Dartmouth's previous administration to raise endowment spending in the 2009 fiscal year was part of a larger trend in higher education, the increase outpaced many of the College's peers and is now being reevaluated as the College's new administration moves to address the institution's budget gap. The decision to increase endowment spending technically termed the endowment distribution rate led the College to tap further into its investments just as the value of those investments declined precipitously.

Following his Oct. 30 arrest for underage alcohol consumption, New Hampshire State Rep. Brian Poznanski, D-Hillsborough, has been dropped as the primary sponsor of the "Good Samaritan" legislation crafted by Dartmouth College Democrats and the New Hampshire House of Representatives will now not be able vote on the legislation this session, according to Ryan Tincher '12, the New Hampshire College Democrats communications director. The New Hampshire College Democrats were unable to find a replacement sponsor for the bill before the Nov. 12 deadline to introduce new legislation, Tincher said.

Admissions officers from many of Dartmouth's peer institutions travel more frequently and to a broader range of countries than do admissions representatives from the College, according to multiple college admissions officers. While the Dartmouth admissions office visits approximately eight to 10 countries a year in order to attract international students and increase visibility and awareness overseas, representatives from the College's peer institutions reported traveling to as many as 35 countries each year.

Over 1,600 students submitted early decision applications for the Dartmouth Class of 2014 a record high and a 3-percent increase over the number submitted last year, the College announced in a statement late Tuesday.The number of applications increased by about 13 percent for the Class of 2013.

The inauguration of College President Jim Yong Kim on Tuesday drew unprecedented international attention, as multiple Korean news outlets sent reporters to Dartmouth to cover the event. The Korean media sought to cover not only the historic inauguration of the Ivy League's first Asian American president, but also to interview Kim and his family members to understand his path to success, according to Korean reporters interviewed by The Dartmouth.

In what may be an early sign of the political storm surrounding the 2010 mid-term elections, the race for Lebanon, N.H., state representative has seen increased spending and has been given added significance by state and local party officials ahead of the vote in a special election on June 2. The Lebanon state House seat was vacated in early March when Democrat Gene Andersen resigned for financial reasons.

Liberty University, an evangelical Christian liberal arts institution founded by televangelist and conservative commentator Jerry Falwell, has banned its College Democrats organization from participating in campus activities, The New York Times reported. Mark Hine, the university's vice president for student affairs, said that the College Democrats violated the university's main principles by advocating for pro-choice legislation and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. The organization's initial recognition was couched as an oversight by the university's administration, according to The New York Times.
