Men’s Tennis
After two consecutive missed seasons, the women’s rugby team has finally returned to play in the 2021 fall season and is off to a hot start. With a seasoned roster, including 25 returning upperclassmen players playing their first fall season since 2019, the Big Green has made up for lost time in its first three games.
The women’s volleyball team is off to a strong 8-1 start following its return to competition. The Big Green opened their season with the Lehigh Steel Tournament in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. They secured wins over SUNY Binghamton (3-0), Lehigh University (3-2) and St. Francis College (3-1).
On April 24, interim athletics director Peter Roby ’79 announced the hiring of Jesse Moore as the new head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. Since being cut last July and subsequently reinstated in January, the teams were without a coach even as they returned to practice this winter.
The NCAA Division I Council ratified a new rule on Wednesday that will allow athletes in all sports to transfer once without sitting out a year in residence.
On Wednesday, the College notified student-athletes that it had canceled all in-person athletic activities due to a spike in COVID-19 cases on campus. As of Monday’s COVID-19 dashboard update, there were 122 active cases among students — over quadruple the number of cases reported as the surge was first recorded on Wednesday.
Last month, the athletics department announced the reinstatement of five teams originally cut in July: men’s and women’s golf, men’s lightweight rowing and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Athletes from both the reinstated sports and other teams have expressed support for the College’s decision, though some say they have been left with a lasting distrust of the athletics department.
