Michael Kiefer, newly appointed vice president for presidential initiatives and principal gifts, officially began his duties on Sept. 2. Kiefer, a former vice president for institutional advancement at Haverford College with more than 25 years of experience working in higher education, will work with deep-pocketed alumni to raise money for large projects like the creation of faculty clusters and the expansion of the Hood Museum of Art and Thayer School of Engineering.

Gregg Fairbrothers ’76, the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network’s founding director who teaches at the Tuck School of Business, will officially leave Tuck June 30. Students, alumni and faculty have rallied as news spread, circulating a petition that garnered over 270 signatures as of press time to keep Fairbrothers at Dartmouth.

Martin McMillan, who comes to Hanover from Rochester, New York, began as the chief of the Hanover Fire Department Monday. As he settles into his new role, McMillan said, he will focus on getting to know the community and collaborating with other Upper Valley fire departments to boost efficiency.

The National Cancer Institute selected Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as a lead academic participating site for a new network of clinical trials, which will allow its Norris Cotton Cancer Center to boost efficiency and improve trial completion rates.

Pending approval by its members, the downtown Hanover location of the Co-op Food Store will begin renovations this October, adding 2,700 square feet and several new food options while improving its energy efficiency. The $5.3 million proposal requires majority approval among Co-op members who choose to vote during the approval period, which will last through April.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness of sexual violence and its effect on the community, will hold new and regular programming throughout next week. Movement Against Violence, formerly known as Mentors Against Violence, will facilitate student discussions about what campus sexual violence prevention could look like.

UltraViolet, a women’s rights advocacy group, has launched a national campaign against sexual assault at Dartmouth that uses petitions and online advertisements to demand that the College take stronger action to combat the issue. The campaign began in March with an online petition that urged the College to include expulsion as a punishment for rape and block campus Internet access to a Bored at Baker post that targeted a female member of the Class of 2017. Over 50,000 people have signed the petition, and the group has around 550,000 members.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center received an anonymous $10 million donation, the largest gift in the hospital’s history, earmarked for a new palliative and hospice care center which is set to open in 2017, DHMC announced on March 20. Providing in-patient attention outside of a hospital atmosphere, the center will care for patients at the end of their lives and those with life-threatening illnesses, who often have complex needs that are difficult or impossible to treat at home.

After four years of serving fresh, homemade gelato to Hanover residents and Dartmouth students, Morano Gelato aims to expand out from the Upper Valley to the Boston area. Owner and founder Morgan Morano has decided to franchise the business. She hopes to open two stores by March 2015 and at least 10 stores nationwide over the next five years, starting with the Boston area.

One year after launching a campus-wide push to withdraw the College’s investments in companies that do business in fossil fuels, Divest Dartmouth has gained support from students and alumni. In the spring, the group’s members will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate for a second year in a rally against the Keystone XL oil pipeline, a $5.3 billion project that would carry up to 830,000 barrels of crude oil daily from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
