During a performance of her self-written work "Trans Plantations" in the Bentley Theater at the Hopkins Center last Thursday, writer, performer and filmmaker Janis Astor del Valle invoked the age-old adage "the show must go on," even though it meant being stuck in a straitjacket for an hour -- a straitjacket that she started out the show wearing, but was supposed to remove four pages into the piece's script.

At a college that boasts graduates with the highest median salaries 10 years out of school and a freshman class with more self-proclaimed Econ majors and pre-meds than incoming "undeclareds," it is easy to see how the more creative (and potentially less financially lucrative) areas of study might slip under the radar.

When I first heard bands talk about album sales, marketing and music as a business like accounting rather than an immeasurable art, I was a bit taken aback. Obviously, there is an industry behind music that makes it possible for bands to get their albums and concert tickets into the hands of hungry fans, but I thought that was something that managers, agents and record label executives dealt with while the bands lived solely in a creative world filled with nothing but muses, energy, starlight and magic.

Rock 'n' roll once had a reputation for being the genre run by the bad boys, the rebels and the outrageous partiers. But those glamorous days of drug overdoses, hotel room antics and front page scandals seem to have vanished. Whatever happened to sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll?

Whether you've realized it or not, many of the disc jockeys at the dance parties, formals and other social events who have been helping you get your groove on are actually Dartmouth students who have invested time and money into the art and equipment of DJing. Many fraternities have house DJs -- brothers in the house who pay their social dues by DJing for their parties.

In honor of Valentine's Day, it would only be appropriate to talk about a musical style that Valentine's Day brings out the best in, and that, of course, is emo.

Trends and movements can be synonyms, but in the music world the two couldn't sound any more different from each other. Divya Gunasekaran explains how, like highschool, following the trends mindlessly just results in really embarrassing pictures.
